Today’s racing games are 3D multimedia extravaganzas with their incredible graphics and sound effects. 20 years ago graphically games were incredibly simple compared to new games but if you’re talking about gameplay things aren’t that clearcut. Overdrive is a topdown racing game in which you drive against two other players around 20 courses and five different terrain types.

You start the game against average racers and you can choose to qualidy which will allow you to get to know the course which is very important but you can also just go straight ahead and race. During the race you can collect powerups like turbo boost and fuel but also money which is needed for you to continue racing your vehicles. Yep that’s right vehicles because you don’t only drive a regular race car but also 4×4, GP cars and buggies. All of these have their own courses that match their capabilities.

There have been many games of this type before but the fact that you can drive several different vehicles is quite unique. The courses are ok but the corners are all exactly 90 degrees which isn’t really special and it should not be a techinal limit even for that time. Overall though there’s enough to keep you occupied for some time at least and worthy of a try.

Overal rating: 7/10
